University of Iowa 2022-Present
Over hire scenic artist for University of Iowa Theatre and Opera Departments. Worked with Scenic Charge Artist Joan Newhouse to implement scenic painting treatments. Primarily worked on large floor designs for 3-4 productions a year. Also worked with graduate students and other over hire artists.
Tobins Lake Studios 2014 - 2019
Resident scenic artist and backdrop designer at company for 4 1/2 years. Designed and executed all backdrop production, painted over 45 backdrops, and designed 20+ backdrops. Maintained paint shop supplies and safety standards, executes all preparatory work such as stencil and stamp making, testing of treatments, and all backdrop preparation.
Epic Systems, Inc 2013
Scenic artist who was a part of a 5 person paint crew located at Epic Systems, Inc to execute an ice cave theme in a large room over approximately 400 linear square feet and 25 painted walls in their Deep Space Auditorium. Experiences included paint treatments of ice formations and animals. Also helped train other less experienced painters to achieve a cohesive look throughout the mural.
Children's Theatre of Madison 2012 - 2013
Scenic Charge for a 5 show season, which runs September thru May. Primary responsibilities include coordinating with outside designers on each show, balancing a small paint budget with allocated hours for each production.
Lexington Children's Theatre 2009-2011
Lead Scenic Artist/Properties Master May 2009 thru May 2011. The position was created for me specifically. I was in charge of all set paint for an 13 show season, which includes paint mixing, budgeting, paint ordering, backdrop painting, hiring personnel, and supervision of up to 4 interns and various volunteers.
Teaching Experience
Cobalt Studios Summer Scene Painting Program 2021-Present
Co-Instructor with Rachel Keebler for a 3 week scenic art training coarse each summer. Ms. Clausius leads 9 students through lecture and demonstration to achieve multiple projects. Such instruction includes discussion of basic trompe l'oeil, perspective drawing, paint mixing, marble painting, painting translucency backdrops, and problem solving through each subject.
United States Institute of Theatre Technology Paint Lab 2014 - Present
Lead Coordinator for the Paint Lab series of events. A hands on lab created for USITT, it produces 10-12 events over a 4 day period. During this time hundreds of artists participate in events ranging from teaching beginning scenic art techniques such as using bamboos, drawing, basic scenic treatments and surface prep. Other events include how to paint stained glass, how to paint on different fabrics such as velour, plastic, and scrims. The Paint Lab brings in artists from around the country at the top of their industry to demonstrate their skills to emerging artists. Ms. Clausius coordinates with USITT and these artists to teach and demonstrate these skills each year.
Oakland University 2015
Part-time Adjunct Instructor of Scenic Art. Teaching beginning scenic art, along with a small section of advanced scenic techniques for students who are ready for advanced training. Special attention was paid to scenic techniques such as wood grain, stone work, brick, and marble. Advanced students concentrated on learning refined brush work, problem solving, and other advanced art concepts.
